Weather is cool!

There’s no shortage of posts on my social media feeds about weather.

Truth is weather in the mountains is pretty important – severe thunderstorms can bring fire-starting lightning and deep snow can interfere with getting to the store to buy chocolate.

For my last birthday my daughter and her husband bought me a weather station. I had no idea how to install it so it sat in the box until Jason came up. He spied the unopened box and took charge.

Jason installed it on a found post near the Slightly Unenchanted Forest. Consideration must be paid when installing something like this. There has to be height and space. Nothing too close to the house.

I also know that it takes a lot of batteries! I spent $40 for special batteries so that the weather station can work when the power’s out. The outside unit is charged by the sun.

So once up, the weather station needs to “learn” about the weather in the area so it’s gathering data so averages, peaks and lows can be recorded.

Lately, the unit is telling me that the highest wind gust I’ve had was 32 mph on February 14. It also displays high and low temps and puts out weather warnings. It’s pretty cool.

I often think I should have gone into weather forecasting at school. I’m a nerd when it comes to barometric pressure and dew point.

I’m still learning how to use the unit but Colorado weather promises to deliver lots of data. Seeing it’s how it’s spring and there’s still a ton of snow on the ground.
