Baseboards on board

Choose, buy, paint, cut, cut. cut, nail

What’s it been? Twelve years? Living with hardwood flooring but no baseboards.

Just never got around to it, never really missed it. Mostly because I wasn’t happy with the entire process of getting hardwood floors done. A sketchy flooring company, a piss-poor quality product and a friend who did a good job but the short pieces of were a baptism by wood. He said he’d come back and do the baseboards.

With the paperwork signed and in the starting gate, the preparations have begun to make the house ready for potential buyers. Like they’ll notice the baseboards. LOL.

A real estate agent I didn’t use gave me the name of a family company (REMs = Real Estate Magicians) that does just about anything. They were ready to tackle the gate but I already had hired a professional so they jumped right in and started measuring. I assumed they were there to measure and estimate.

Nope, they measured, chose, estimated and drove straight down to Home Depot to buy product. They also bought product to patch some spots on the walls where the morons who tore out the baseboard heaters left gaping holes and were unprofessionally patched.

Two hours later REM arrived with materials in hand, set up saw horses and began to paint the square-edge baseboards. It was a very well-oiled machine. They started working and the dark brown baseboards began to join meld into the door jams and doors.

Well, except for the door jams and doors that Mr. Missionary built but didn’t finish the job. When he bought door handles that cost $80 each, I decided he had to go. His ‘work’ continues to haunt me at times.

I wish I’d known REM were self-starters and moved at a lightning pace because I didn’t get a chance to move any furniture or clean any other dust bunnies, long, silver hair, dirt and whatever else lurked under furniture and in corners. It was embarrassing. But a lesson learned – less stuff, less to clean.

Oh, boy baseboards!

While working they found small things that’d make the house look ‘better.’ For instance, the inner door. The old one had a gash in it. I’m sure whoever kicked it had a hell of a time getting their foot out of there. That gash sort of a ‘smiled’ at me for 15 years, 11 months, 15 days. But the old one is gone, the new one is in place. They made it look so easy!

They honestly worked so well together, I wouldn’t have been surprised if they started to sing, “Hi-Ho-Hi-Ho, it’s off to work we go!”

Clarification – the doors were stained, the baseboards were painted. Just thought that was important to mention.

The only caveat of the project? They came up 5-feet short of their estimate and had to return the next day.

The inspection is coming and REM will be my fixers. That is unless we need PROFESSIONALS. Right now, REM are my professionals.

I have baseboards. Now that I’m leaving, I have baseboards.
